†Corynexochida
Corynexochida is an extinct order of trilobites that thrived from the early Cambrian to the late Devonian. It represents one of the major early-diverging trilobite lineages, notable for its morphological diversity and wide geographic range.
Corynexochids are distinguished from other trilobite clades by a combination of features: a typically vaulted glabella that often extends forward, sometimes with a bulbous or spine-like anterior projection; opisthoparian facial sutures; and thoracic segments that may bear strong axial or pleural spines. The pygidium is often large and elaborately spined or segmented. Genal spines are common, and the overall body plan often emphasizes a strong axial lobe, in contrast to the flatter forms of ptychopariids or the more ornamented lichids.
These trilobites are thought to have been benthic and mobile, with some possibly predatory or scavenging. Their cosmopolitan fossil record and rapid early diversification make them key biostratigraphic indicators in Cambrian and early Paleozoic strata.
