Cardinia is the type genus of the Cardiniidae, an extinct group of large bivalves abundant in the Lower Lias (Lower Jurassic, Hettangian–Sinemurian, ~200 Ma) of Europe. The shells are thick, oval to heart-shaped, with prominent concentric growth lines and a robust hinge. They lived as shallow burrowers in sandy and muddy seafloors of warm epicontinental seas. The largest species exceed 20 cm and form shell-rich beds in the Lias of northern England (Scunthorpe, Yorkshire).
